Your eye gates are feeding you with darkness.
Scripture
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” - Matthew 6:22-23
Observation
This scripture isn’t here to massage our wants and desires but to plainly deliver truth, the hard truth. Every part of our body plays a role both physically and spiritually. This scripture gives us insight on the role our eyes play in our Christian walk. A lamp is a device that brings us light. Our eyes are that lamp. When we have light, darkness cannot co exist with it . Here we can see our source of light is our eyes . Light is what allows us to see people and situations for what they really are . Light is what allows us to escape traps and bondages the enemy sets out for us . Light is what allows us to make right decisions and to be in the perfect will of God . This means it is very important what we consume with our eyes.
“Eyes”,when I searched up the root meaning are also metaphoric for the “eyes of the mind”. Knowing this , what we think about and meditate on is very important that’s why the enemy is always contending for our mind.
What you ponder over a lot in your mind translates to your emotions and your emotions influences your actions (ie your will). We know the enemy is after our souls which comprises of our mind, emotions and will.
An example is if you’re consistently thinking about lustful content or feeding your physical eyes with pornography , this will translate to feeling lustful which will then lead to sexual immorality in the long run . If the enemy can have your mind he can easily influence your will.
Application
For this reason, we need to live a life of intentionality . Ask yourself this movie I’m watching , what kingdom is it serving ? As I scroll endlessly on social media for hours what am I feeding my body through my eyes? This phonographic material I’m watching, what desires is it arousing in me ? This horror movies I keep on watching what is it opening me up to ? People may think you’re over spiritualising everything but the word of God does not lie . So I put it to you , let every man be a liar and let God alone be the truth. The word of God is light so investing in quality Bible studies consistently everyday will allow for a healthy body. Being intentional with your eyes and mind (ie thoughts , imaginations etc) leads to a healthy way of living , speaking , acting , relating to others with love . When we read the Bible or watch edifying content we need to ponder over it day and night leaving no room for the enemy and his lies.
Hence why the Bible would also tell us to cast down any imaginations that arises against the knowledge of God . (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Prayer
Heavenly Father thank You for Your word today . I pray asking for forgiveness where I’ve not stewarded my eye gates properly . May Your blood wash out everything that I’ve consumed which isn’t of Your kingdom. Lead me and guide me moving forward as to what to watch and meditate on that I may provide light to my body in Jesus Name I pray amen.
