Lust for the things of the world.
Scripture
“For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world.” 1 John 2:16
Observation
In a world where we live but are told not to be of it (John 17:16), it takes intentionality, determination and most importantly the grace and mercy of God to not be affected or influenced by it. The world has a lot to offer, riches, status, fame, glory etc . We can even see this when satan himself took Jesus high up a mountain and offered Him a lot (Matthew 4:8-9) . However the world is enmity to the things of God so we shouldn’t allow ourselves to have a strong desire towards it. The “world” has systems, culture and accepted way of living in society which always contradicts the things of God. When we start to strongly desire things that makes our flesh feel good, bring pleasure to our eyes or makes us prideful (eg our achievements) it’s a dangerous place to be at as a child of God. Reason being we no longer stand with God the Father. We become friends with the world.
Application
The irony is , in Christ He has all this to give us and more. However we’re called to not lust after them. Lusting after them is what drives you to sell your soul for them. Selling your soul sounds far fetched for the average believer right? But let’s take a look at it . Our soul is made of our mind, emotions and will. So when you live a life where your actions are driven by your lustful desires and thoughts , where you don’t allow God to lead your actions , where you can’t control your appetite for fame , riches , recognition etc.. then the question really is , who or what has control over you or your soul ? Some questions to ask yourself is, is this desire I have consuming my thoughts? Is it affecting my emotions greatly ? Can I resist the urge to pursue it if need be? Am I prioritising this over the things of God ? If any of this is yes then it’s time to repent and return back to seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
Prayer
Heavenly Father thank You for Your word today. May You help me resist the urge to lust over the world and what it has to offer . Help me to love what You love and hate what You hate. I repent where I’ve indulged in lust in Jesus Name I pray Amen.
